New Orleans in October...
Greetings from the Big Easy, We rolled into town around 9:00 AM this morning after an overnight drive from Jacksonville, FL. We're still buzzing from the show there last night. The Florida Theater is one of the best sounding theaters in America, having undergone not one but 2 major renovations in the last 20 years. From the opening chords of "Blue Collar Man" we were smiling not just because of the thunderous welcome we were getting from our beloved fans, but it just sounded so (here's how we like to describe the sound) warm, bright and woody with just the right amount of ambiance. Even the audience sounded good to our ears. We had one of those nights with virtually no adjustment time. From the first note we were off and running and we never looked back. "I Am The Walrus" seems to have a life of its own and even in a town like Jacksonville where the local radio programmers have not made up their minds to play it, the fans went crazy for it, as if it was a Classic STYX song from one of our multi-platinum albums from the 80's. In city after city in America, there are these program directors who are stepping up and putting it on the air, despite the trends at radio for the last ten years to not let programmers add what they believed in by the corporate guys upstairs who are riding FM radio into the ground. I am simply amazed that anyone dares to do this in today's radio halls. Perhaps it is the success of satellite radio that is bringing a glimmer of hope back to the hearts and minds of so many great radio talents who have been suppressed for far too long. Anyway, I digress, but with starry eyes nonetheless. But what really made our night in Jacksonville was what 38 Special bass man Larry "L.J." Junstrom brought to our bus. In the dressing room in San Juan LJ promised to turn us on to the best Bar-b-que in Florida, and dang if he didn't. It was great seeing him and the fine little young lady he brought with him backstage before the show. LJ's a true Southerner when it comes to hospitality and we were the on the receiving end of it big time last night. When we climbed aboard our bus there were several massive containers and when I started peeling them open I realized what it was. It was only Chuck, Lawrence and me on the bus for the first 5 minutes and Lawrence being a Vegan wasn't interested, but Chuck and I dove in. I don't eat red meat but I was first to grab a drumstick from the container of chicken. It was tasty beyond words. Chuck took to the chicken, the pork and beans, and the ribs and by the time everyone else trickled in there was some serious "Mmmm-ing, Oh man-ing" and "You've got to taste this!" going on. From Todd, JY, Ricky, Daniel, Suzy and JY Young, Jeanne, George and me, THANKS LJ. We mean it. You are the Shizzle! We spent the day shooting some video and stills to use for a video we'll be putting together for "I Am The Walrus" in the next couple of weeks. New Orleans is one of our favorite, and one of the most distinctive locations in the country and we could hardly get from one block to another without finding great stuff to photograph. The people were very cool and happy to see us in their city. Several street performers introduced themselves and told us what big fans they were. Everywhere shop owners and workers came out to see us and say hello. It was a magical day. Now we're back in our rooms with some sore doggies but some great footage. I hope we see you tomorrow at the show. We're in great spirits and ready to Rock This Town BIG TIME.
