Hello Friends,
We're here in San Antonio after traveling from Houston overnight.
We turned Ricky on to one of our favorite STYX Bus Classic Films, Troy
Duffy's "Boondock Saints" on the way, and soon we were pulling
up to the hotel we're in now.
Last night in Houston was one for the books.
Conditions seemed perfect for not only a great instrumental performance,
but vocally we were in the zone as well. It's hard to say why things
align so well, or even what those things will be, and chances are unless
you are in the band, you don't pick up on all these nano-nuances. But
for us it's what we live for as a band. Every live performance is as
Todd likes to call it "a conversation" and it can go honestly,
open and without any self-consciousness interfering, or it can be guarded,
with one or more participants distracted by other thoughts or personal
issues, etc. So many variables, so many opportunities for mistakes
which if you're not diligent, can jar you and cause you to make mistakes
behind that one. My friend Mike Casey, who taught me to play tennis
years ago, pushed me not to be thinking about the ball I had already
hit, not to get caught up in looking backwards because another ball
was coming and I needed to focus on that. This is an unwritten rule
with live performance. Add in the fact that you are probably not getting
enough good rest, not eating quite as good as you'd like, and all the
other little things that come with traveling to a different city every
day. To some of you this might sound like an awful way to spend your
life, but even writing this I'm getting a little burst of adrenaline
at the very thought of getting to do it again. Maybe you have to be
a little nuts to do this. If that's what this is, then lock me up now
doctor. There's no cure for me or my brother band and crew mates who
love this just as much as I do.
So come see us, see this big beautiful ROCK SHOW before it passes
you by. Maybe you'll get a little adrenaline buzz yourself.
It's enough to make you want to run off and join the circus!
