Albuquerque, We're Here, We're Caffeinated And Ready To ROCK! Journal Pavilion Hello Friends, We're in Albuquerque today and the change in altitude and humidity (lack thereof) tell us we're not in Texas anymore. It's an incredibly beautiful ride through the desert which Ricky and I awoke early enough to catch a good amount of yesterday morning. I don't think you can ever get used to beauty of the New Mexico desert. And then the gradual change to green as you near Albuquerque is made all the more dynamic by contrast. To all our friends in San Antonio who spent the evening with STYX there, our sincere thanks. We had a great time there as always. I got to visit with Bill Stevens, who was our sound engineer back in the late 70's and has been a college professor in Austin for quite a few years since traveling with STYX back in the day. Texas life has been good to Bill and he always likes to come see the latest technology we employ in our current productions. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but for us upright two-legged variety, it's what keeps us alive and looking forward to the next day ahead of us. Bill's still got it big time, and it's always nice to see STYX alumni as we travel. We were relieved that the storm that knocked our Oklahoma City show out for the time being didn't follow us across the country to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio the way it was threatening to. You can imagine, weather is just something that comes with the notion of playing Amphitheaters in the spring and summer time, and as much as we dread their eminence, often when they do come, as was the case in Nashville, these shows become more memorable than almost all the others, just because we all got to play in the rain the way we used to when we were kids. But when the temperatures dip too low, and conditions are too miserable and perhaps dangerous for you and us, sometimes we have to pull the trigger and do the right thing, which regrettably is to reschedule. I don't think weather will be a factor here tonight, other than maybe drinking a little more water to keep the vocal cords lubed up! STYX fan Gabriel Ortiz, who works at Starbuck's in Albuquerque, got me good yesterday when he said they would not accept my Starbuck's card, nor would he accept cash from me. He then said he would like to buy my coffee as a gesture of his appreciation. Man, got me GOOD! But I got him back. He's now on my guest list for tonight and he's giving his ticket (he'd already bought) to his brother. One good deed deserves another! It's good to be in STYX!!! P.S. Oh yes, here's another laugh you can have at my expense. After the show in San Antonio, I was enjoying the great water pressure and comfortable temperature of an after-show shower in the dressing room there at the venue. I should preface this by telling you that in a large percentage of places we play, the showers are often a grab bag of crazy old shower heads, little or no hot water, not much pressure, ot way too much pressure and in general not like the comfort of home. When they are good, we all appreciate it. This was a dandy and I was there for a good soaking. I started thinking to myself, "Chuck took my Hard Rock hooded bath robe that was in the empty bunk on our bus, thinking it was his and I bet HIS is still in it's plastic wrapper in his wardrobe case..." (I had been trying to unravel the case of my missing robe which was a gift from our manager to us all in Chicago, and EUREKA! I thought I'd figured it out!) In my excitement I reached to turn off the water but instead of turning it off, I turned it to scalding hot! YEOW! And as I bobbed and weaved to avoid the blistering water on vital parts of my anatomy, I grabbed for the handle again and slammed my thumb up against the rough edge of it sending a flash of OUCH up my arm before shutting it off. Now I'm a little scalded, bleeding, smarting but at the same time very amused at the crazy 2 or 3 seconds of mayhem I'd just experienced, smacking me out of my little shower day dream. So if you're close enough to see the cut on my right thumb tonight, you can have another little giggle on my tab. It's on the house. I'm happy to be of service... TS
