What A Difference A
Couple Of Days Makes...
July 7, 2004
Hello Friends,
Well, as the punch line to an old joke says, "Break's over, back
on your heads." We loved that recent long stretch right down to
the being up all night to get on the first flight out to go home for
a couple of days, but man it's been good to be home. Jeanne picked
me up and we got the dogs and headed to the beach. Ah, Southern California,
one more time. The dogs went crazy when they saw me because it has
been a month and that must be an eternity for them.
While at the beach we got out and continued our research on birds
at local pet stores and are narrowing our choices to either a Conure,
a Senegal or perhaps a Cockatoo. We've been pondering it for over a
year but are getting close to making the commitment now that Jeanne's
mother lives nearby. That was always the kicker, that we wouldn't have
someone to care for the bird when we both were away. We've met some
wonderful "Bird People" who have been very helpful in our
quest and seen some places we would might not recommend, but all in
all there seem to be more good keepers than bad.
On the way back to town today we stopped by Norm's Rare Guitars in
Tarzana to pick up the Tobacco Burst 1980 Gibson Les Paul "Pro" I
fell in love with when we were in Dallas at the Crossroads Guitar
Festival last month. Norm said he would hold it for me and I've been
Jonesing to get my hands on it, so Jeanne and the dogs waited in
the car while I ran inside and threw down for it. It's so pristine
it's hard to imagine it will be a quarter century old next year.
It's in better condition than my newest guitars, but I will be putting
some miles and some hours on it as soon as I get it into the hands
of Jimmy Johnson so he can bring it up to speed with my other road
guitars. Look for it in a few days.
We headed to Joe Montegna's Chicago Hot Dog stand, at the former location
of "Hot Diggity Dog" on Hollywood Way and Verdugo in Burbank
after stopping at Petco for one more look at a particular Senegal Parrot
and picked up a couple of slices of pizza to go. WOW!!! If you get
a chance, check it out. Incredible! I hope Joe and his wife have great
success with this dandy little food stop. It's right on the way to
the Bob Hope Airport so if you have a chance, get in there!
We've begun writing for a new CD project that will get under way sometime
next year. We're in such a good head space for it these days we're
breaking our normal pattern which has been NO WRITING ON TOUR. It never
worked before, but for some reason we've suddenly found ourselves in
the mood and have a nice start on several ROCKIN' tunes. I look forward
to it. The sorry shape of the recording industry aside, we have to
write and create new music no matter what the forces beyond our control
are doing. And STYX fans deserve to hear from us from time to time
to continue the story that started way back when. This looks to be
a very interesting next chapter.
See you soon!
Tommy Shaw
