Hot Springs, Arkansas,

MAGIC SPRINGS TIMBERWOOD AMPHITHEATRE
HOT SPRINGS, AR
JULY 10, 2004

Hello Friends,

We're back in Oklahoma City where the skies are clear, unlike the original date of our show here, where thunderstorms forced us to reschedule. It will be an opportunity to have one more show with Peter Frampton and his band so we're not complaining.

Last night we played for 15,000 enthusiastic STYX fans under the clear Arkansas skies in Hot Springs at an amazing new (one-year-old) Amphitheater set within the lush forest there. It was a little cooler after the sun set, but really, a typical Southern night in July and the humidity made for unbelievable singing conditions. That's the only thing we cannot control from our end and we always do the best we can to sing at the best of our abilities, but when you add the atmospheric conditions like what we had last night, it's like your best day as a singer, all night long. So considering how much we sing, you can imagine how much fun we had last night. Arkansas fans have been STYX supporters longer than almost any others, being among the first to send "Lady" up the charts many moons ago. One of my greatest memories form when I joined the band in 1975 was arriving in Little Rock at Barton Coliseum and seeing for myself the fans I'd heard so much about from the guys in the band. We'd soon see this type of turnout everywhere but Arkansas fans were there from the very start and nothing's changed. Except for now it's obviously second generation STYX fans who heard our music from their parents who are filling a great percentage of the seats.

It was a blast and more than ever we hated to see it come to an end. Hot Springs is on our list of "MUST PLAY AGAIN" locations. We'll be back!

During the afternoon Lawrence, Todd and I ended up working on a piece of music Todd had come to my room with the day before. He had a little scrap of paper with a musical passage written. I never learned to read music, but with Todd's help I was able to turn the chart into a music file and soon he built a drum track. He then explained how the guitar part should go and we had it. So yesterday Lawrence came by to build a keyboard part. because of the tricky time signatures, Todd came by to help us all get it right. Soon it was time to pack up and drive to the gig (the hotel was sold out and we couldn't get a late check out) and since we had a few extra hours, I set my rig up on the bus and we kept on carving away, writing lyrics and adding a vocal section to it.

Like they say about the weather in Michigan, "If you don't like it, wait 15 minutes and it will change," the idea of never writing on the road seems to have changed for us, although it was years not minutes, but we're thrilled. Perhaps it's that technology has made it less of a dreaded ordeal to have access to an easy friendly way of getting it done while on the run, or some other chemical equation, but whatever it is, it's put us ahead of our schedule and given us a sweet jump start on writing a new STYX album.

Back in Los Angeles, the report on Barney the Senegal Parrot is that he's a natural in our house, getting along with the dogs, getting into a routine and it looks like he's gonna do just fine there. Yesterday before Lawrence showed up, I got to see him via the wonders of iChat. I bought Jeanne an iSight camera a few weeks ago and whenever we have a high speed connection we can have a video chat. It's really the next best thing to being in one place together. A real "video phone" and I suggest it for anyone who is separated by the miles like we are so much of the time. I got to see Barney for the first time and the photo you see on the web site is from that chat yesterday. Lawrence got to show Jeanne his red-streaked hair he returned with after the last break. I got to see how Barney and Clyde (our 2 year old Yellow Lab) interact and saw him hanging out on top of his new bird cage. I tell ya, it was almost like transporting myself home for a few minutes. Thank you APPLE!!!

Okay, it's been nice to have the chance to digress. Now, it's off to the land of e-mail.

See you tonight!

TS
