Greetings From The Road... RED LION INN & CASINO
Hello Friends, We're in the Pacific Northwest for a couple of days before we head to Alaska for a day. We're looking forward to seeing STYX fans there. It's been years since I was there with Damn Yankees and just as it was then, we won't be there long enough to do much sight seeing, but just knowing we did it will be worth the trip. We returned to Boise to see the fans who were among the first to tip their hat to us when we hit the road in 1999 with the new lineup. Boise, Idaho will always hold a special place in our hearts for their unabashed and unconditional acceptance at a time when we needed it most. We have since returned many times and the love affair only grows. We all hit the streets to walk around Boise on the day of our show to enjoy the friendly, cool atmosphere of what is still (but not for much longer) one of the best kept secret locales in the country. Ironically, the day we were there USA Today had a big article on Sandpoint, Idaho and how Idaho was quietly becoming the next "It" place to buy and live in. It really is a remarkable place. We headed to Elko, Nevada after our show in Boise, not really sure where it was or what we were in for, but we have learned to be open to great things happening in unusual places. Not that Elko was unusual, just that we'd never been there. What we found was an audience that rivaled the best STYX audiences we've ever performed for. There was such a supply of panties and other lingerie tossed our way during our set that Lawrence started hanging it over the center stage microphone and by the time I went over to sing "Crystal Ball," I had to decide whether to remove it or be somewhat obscured by the massive shawl it had formed. Of course, I read the tea leaves and left it there. With "Fooling Yourself" which followed, I asked the audience outright if it should stay or go, and they said "LEAVE IT!" It was that kind of a night. You know, we're a serious band when it comes to the music, but we do love to have fun, and the Elko fans made it clear that they were too. Even the crew commented on what a fun show it was. Elko, YOU were AWESOME!!! When we arrived at our current location around 8:30 AM today, I was hearing this new riff in my head, so I grabbed a guitar and a practice amp off the bus, set up my computer in my room and laid it down. I waited for Lawrence and Ricky to get settled and they each came over and added their ideas and the next thing we knew, Lawrence and I wrote some lyrics, sang it and got it into enough shape to burn a disk for Todd. It's been very unusual (really unheard of) for us to write on the road, but things have changed and suddenly we are writing like crazy out here. It's given us an exciting look at the shape of a new STYX album as we begin to make plans for recording it next year. There's nothing like looking forward to new STYX music to make the road seem brand new and something to constantly look forward to. Well, it's been a busy day and I'm starting to fade. Thanks again to our friends in Idaho and Nevada. See you all very soon...
