Hola de Puerto Rico! (Updated)
We arrived here in San Juan yesterday from all parts of North America to prepare for tonight's show here with Cheap Trick and 38 Special. We ran into 38 Special checking in at the same time and got to visit a bit with them in the lobby. If you were at Arrowfest you know how great those guys sound and I had to tell them how good the radio spot sounded in the cab Jeanne and I took from the Sea Plane dock where we arrived from St. Thomas minutes earlier. I think the three bands are going to be a magical combination for our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters tonight. It was fun running into STYX band and crew all around the hotel last night, coming and going as everyone got out and about to get a look at this famous old city. The people here have been so hospitable we are all in a bit of a charmed haze, completely infatuated in our discovery of this new, exciting locale. We've played almost everywhere there is to perform, but this is our first time in Puerto Rico. It was a fun sound check over at the new arena this morning. Got to hang out with our crew, the promoter and his team as well as crews from the other two bands, checking out each other's gear and talking musician talk. Drew, who's teching for Cheap Trick, and I caught up on Ted Nugent stories as he strapped Rick Nielsen's 5-neck electric guitar on me, which proved quite entertaining to anyone who was watching. It's over 50 pounds of gangly, neck-heavy guitar and something only Rick is qualified to commandeer, but it was fun getting my hands around a few of the necks. I can't wait to see him play it tonight. We're getting more and more airplay from radio stations who are falling love with our live recording of The Beatles' "I Am The Walrus" which we are now sending to another 1000 stations. We were hoping to get it on The LOOP in Chicago and KLOS in Los Angeles, but program directors are hearing it there and asking for their own copies now. Go figure. As a result, we're moving it up in our set. We love it and are thrilled that it's getting some extra attention where you live. Call in and ask for it, and see what I'm talking about. Back to San Juan...Lawrence and I took the girls to Old San Juan for lunch and to walk around and see what everyone was talking about. It was like something from a promotional film--one intoxicating scene after another--beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture and cobblestone streets, delicious Spanish food, live music performed to perfection, historic fortresses and churches and best of all the wonderful people of Puerto Rico, who all seem truly happy to see us and gladly gave us directions and suggestions as to where to go next for the best coffee, desserts, art, taxis, and other things to round out our trek. We finally had to waddle back to the taxi stand and come back to the hotel for some quiet time and a shower before we head over for our 11:30 start time. Yep, this show's going until after 1:00AM tomorrow morning. Hey, it's Saturday night here in San Juan and the fans here are ready to rock. That makes two of us. Wish you were here. Let's hope we come back, then you should consider
making the trip. We'll just be a small part of your amazing Puerto
Rican adventure, mark my words. We just got back from the show and man what a night it was. 38 Special rocked, with everyone singing along to every song. Great bunch of guys too. Cheap Trick was as awesome as ever, and Robin Zander remains in my book as one of the greatest Rock Singers of all time, and is better now than ever. By the time we took the stage I am surprised the audience had anything left, but they stayed to the very end, paying very close attention to every note. It was intense, and then it was over and we were saying good-bye, taking lots of photos and signing lots of autographs on the way ourt the door. Muchas gracias and adios, until next time! TS |
