Hello From Konocti Harbor...
Downtown Rocks
Modesto, CA
October 8 2004
Hello Friends,
We arrived here in Clear Lake, CA around, let's see, you know I don't
know when we arrived, but Lawrence and I were the last to check in
which was around 11 AM this morning. Any way, we're here now, looking
forward to a sound check/rehearsal so we can go over "Criminal
Mind" and "Suite Madame Blue." We're dusting them off
especially for our upcoming shows in Canada later this week.
Last night we played a street fair in downtown Modesto, CA. It was
a beautiful, cloudless October night and the streets were bulging with
Modestonites who came to ROCK. Man was it fun. The wind kicked up during
Renegade and Lawrence and I were kidding afterward that we looked like
a Michael Jackson video (not the ones with him and the plaintiffs),
like "Dirty Diana." I guess you had to be there... It was
funnier last night :-I
We watched Brian Wilson's "Beautiful Dreamer" again on Showtime
on the way here last night. It was even better the second time. Miss
Taylor looked beautiful in every shot, which isn't surprising since
she's all that in real life and a great singer to boot. Afterwards
as we were winding down, Lawrence found an independent film about hanky
panky in a 16th century manor where an entomologist truly believed
he had the good fortune of marrying into the wealthy family only to
find his wife up to the ultimate taboo (no, this was not on the SPICE
channel) with her brother. I'm telling you this because Lawrence told
me today how it ended. I was actually sound asleep within minutes of
turning it on in my bunk.
...Just back from soundcheck and we got our two songs squared away.
Once more before we play them next week and we'll be good to go. I
don't have my electric 12 string or my mandolin with me so I had to
transpose ACM to the acoustic 12 string and also played SMB on it which
we all agreed sounded better than the electric 12. Maybe that's how
I should do it next week? Oh, sorry--talking to myself...
When we were through with the business at hand we tried to jam on
some of the music on SMILE. HA! Not exactly 12 bar blues, but every
so often we stumbled through some of it. Part of the charm of SMILE
is that it is not done to a click (the electronic metronome which is
behind virtually all modern recording). The human factor is there,
pushing and pulling in a very subtle way which makes it organic even
as it glides, spirals and soars through each movement.
The views here in Konocti Harbor are spectacular, especially down
behind the venue. Earlier there were ski races going on and skiers
must have been doing 50 mph behind these souped up boats which sounded
more like dragsters. No one fell as far as I could tell and I'm glad.
It must hurt like hell to bite the lake at that speed.
Thank you again Modestonians for the California hospitality last night.
You hung in there to the very end and we hated to go, but we'll be
back!
See you tonight down by the lake...
