Hello Friends,
We are supposed to be the professionals here but every once and a
while we get caught up in the energy of the evening and lose ourselves
to the emotional energy in the room.
As a member of a band that I have been touring with since I first
suited up in December of 1975, I have watched fans from limousine windows,
hotel windows, and from across stages all over the world. As a result
I recognize many who remain fans today. This is a one day, one concert
at a time life, in as much as the show you did last night is history
and in order to play tonight's gig, you dig down and start from scratch
all over again. Just because you may have had a great one last night
means nothing to the challenge of making it true tonight, and all that.
You get the picture. It's our job to remain detached, to let you have
the emotional experience while we do our best to get it as right as
we can
But last night a saw a fan named Mark, whom I have seen at our concerts
since he was an eager teenager in the seventies, always letting us
know he was there and always among the most avid and truly excited
to see us whenever we played anywhere in New England. Over the years
he was always there. Cut to 2004. I saw him in the second row last
night and I had to share this with the audience. before Crystal Ball,
I asked Libby, our Lady of Lighting, to turn up the house lights and
call for a spotlight to point Mark out. He stood up and got a huge
response from the audience. He's got to be in his late 30's now, a
grown man with a life and responsibilities that go along with it, just
like the rest of us, and he still comes to see us when we come to New
England. He is as enthusiastic as ever, inspiring fans around him to
get into it. It was so moving that I had to shake myself out of it
to remember the first verse of Crystal Ball. To Mark and others like
him who have remained our faithful fans, we thank you.
I promise to be more professional tonight and get the words right.
See you tonight!
