Loose Lips Synch Ships...
SNL LIP SYNCH

Hello Friends,
I just read an interview with Ashlee Simpson regarding her disastrous
performance on Saturday Night Live this past weekend where she walked
off stage when her "backing track" caught her off guard.
In the Washington Post, quoting Simpson on the Today Show, she said "All
sorts of singers, including stars, use backup tracks when they are
performing live. Most artists on big shows do that," she said." This
isn't exactly true You still hear real singing on television, and it's
not hard to tell real from canned. She might believe that the definition
of "live" includes singing to a backing track (which is featured,
rather than featuring her actual live vocal), but last time I checked,
that was synonymous to lip-synching.
It's surprising that a television show with the word "LIVE" featured
as one third of their legendary name would permit an artist to lip
synch, but perhaps this was something that needed to happen, to let
viewers know that this is going on. There is a big difference in what
happens when an artist has to suit up, dig down and give you their
best even when the elements of the day are working against them. THAT's
entertainment. That's what separates singing in the shower from singing
live on television. Everyone can sing in the shower. It's doing your
best when everything's falling apart that makes you a professional.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Ashlee Simpson and I wish
her well and hope she uses this experience to add to what she'll need
to have a long career, and that's more experience. She has risen to
where she is fair and square, and besides, it's an old musician inside
joke that whenever there's a problem, "blame the drummer..." She's
only going along with what's accepted by the powers that be. Not too
long ago the powers at SNL were legendary for their ruthless pursuit
of organic brilliance. Books were written about how hard it was for
great talents to get their moment on air. Those days seem to be gone
as far as musical groups go. It's bad use of good technology and it's
dumbing down the audience. That's a shame. There are so many talented
artists of her generation who have paid their dues who deserve that
slot on Saturday Night Live that it's a shame it is turned into "Saturday
Night Pre-recorded."
