11-Aug-96 We love you Portland... It was one of those cities that kept falling through the cracks. From years ago when Tommy got a throat infection and the show had to be canceled to routing problems and hall availability, etc., Portland seemed to be impossible to schedule into a STYX tour. But last night all that changed when the band performed at Portland Meadows. Since there was an early curfew, a great deal of the show was performed in the daylight. Tommy told the crowd "It is great to be able to see you all, all the way to the back!" Because it was at the race track, there were no seats and it was "festival seating". When he said "Thirteen years has been long enough," it was probably more like 16 years! Earlier that day, Todd was in the pharmacy stocking up on vitamins when he looked at the person next to him and realized it was Vinnie Colaiuta, who had just performed the night before in Portland. He introduced himself and the "drum-talk" commenced...And, speaking of Todd and other "drummer-kings", one of his all time favorite drummers, Steve Smith from Journey called to say he would be coming to see STYX in Los Angeles... Chuck seems more energized than ever and has been joining the line-up down front on a regular basis. He looks like a man on a mission! Next stop, The Gorge, 150 miles outside Seattle. Reported to be THE greatest venue to play -- Red Rocks +. We will let you know |
